In my opinion, "anime" is the same as cartoons.
At first, I thought anime was a type of style or genre, and that shows like the The Boondocks and Avatar were anime. Nope. Anime means "cartoon" in Japan apparently. But here, anime means "Japanese animation". As far as I know, Japanese animation is the ONLY animation that gets a special name for it.
Why isnt the German word for cartoons used for cartoons made in Germany?
Why isnt the Spanish word for cartoons for cartoons made in Spain?
Why isnt the French word for cartoon used for cartoons made Quebec or France?
Why does Japanese animation only get this treatment? Apparently it's SOO special that it gets a seperate category. It's animation, guys. I prefer to call it "Japanese animation", "French Animation", Canadian animation, etc so theres no confusion over anything and no unnessecary debates.
